Description :
Une herbe ou un petit arbre. Il ne cesse de croître d'année en année. Il atteint 2 à 5 m de haut. Les tiges sont renflées au niveau des nœuds. Il possède de grandes feuilles en forme de coeur. Ils mesurent 30 cm de long. Les côtés à la base sont inégaux. Les feuilles se rétrécissent jusqu'à l'extrémité et sont légèrement poilues. La tige des feuilles a des ailes. Les feuilles ont un parfum anisé. Les fleurs sont blanches. Ils portent des épis dressés et minces. Ceux-ci tombent aux extrémités. Ils mesurent 15 à 28 cm de long. Cette tige florale est produite à l'opposé d'une feuille. Le fruit est petit et charnu.
