Une plante herbacée vivace. Les tiges mesurent 40 à 80 cm de hauteur. Ils sont légèrement boisés à la base. La plante est peu ramifiée et renflée au niveau des nœuds. Les tiges des feuilles mesurent 1 à 3 cm de long. Les fleurs sont produites à l'aisselle des feuilles. Le fruit est rouge orangé brillant et rond. Ils sont enfermés dans un calice gonflé. Les graines sont jaune pâle et mesurent 2 mm de diamètre.
