Une herbe. Elle atteint 3 m de haut. Il a des rhizomes souterrains. Les feuilles sont grandes et vert foncé avec un vert plus pâle le long de la nervure médiane. Ils sont vert grisâtre en dessous. Les pousses fleuries sont dressées et mesurent 25 cm de long. Ceux-ci ont empilés des bractées de fleurs coriaces. Ils sont jaunes ou oranges et les fleurs jaillissent sur les bords.
